Matt Whitaker, the newly minted acting Attorney General, ran a failed bid for U.S. Senate in 2014 against one of the people who may have a vote on his confirmation if he’s nominated, as well as a top former Trump White House adviser. Whitaker ran a distant fourth place in Iowa’s GOP primary in 2014, losing to eventual Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA). The second-place finisher in that race was Sam Clovis, a conservative local radio host who went on to become Trump’s 2016 campaign chairman and briefly served as the White House adviser to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
