Amazon.com Inc. is close to a deal to locate its second headquarters between Long Island City in Queens, New York and Crystal City in Arlington, Va., the New York Times reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the decision-making process. Amazon will have a total of 50,000 workers in the two locations, the paper reported. Amazon executives met last week with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, one person said, adding that the state has offered hundreds of millions of dollars in potential subsidies to seal the deal. Amazon needs to hire tens of thousands of high-tech workers, leading some to speculate that it would select a major East Coast metropolitan area for its planned second headquarters. The search for a location has been going on for a year with the company narrowing its short list to 20 cities in January. Amazon declined to comment to the New York Times. Shares were down 0.9% premarket, but have gained 39.2% in 2018, while the S&P 500 has gained 2.4%. Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move.
